    Frequently Asked Questions

The Doggie Dooley is a biological product and occasionally needs some "tweaking" based on the variables which lend to the waste digestion. Things such as heat (or cold), amount of water, amount of digester powder, the soil conditions, and the dog's diet all have an effect.

Not Draining-- "It seems like my unit is slowly filling up instead of being fully absorbed into the ground. What can I do?"

  • The tank will always have waste in it. The digestive action happens at the bottom of the pile, under the water/moisture. This is normal. However, insure there is enough water in the tank. Water is the activator for the Digester Powder. Do not let the tank or stools become completely dry. As you add water, an equal amount should exit through the draining holes (except for the Pyramid shaped models where there is no drain holes). Do not worry about adding too much water as long as its draining.
  • For optimum bacteria activation, water should be luke warm or room temperature. Not too cold or too hot.
  • The Chlorine content of your water may be too high. If you detect an odor of chlorine in your water, allow the water to sit out overnight or in the sunlight for two hours.
  • You may be washing away too much of the Digester Powder. Allow the Digester Powder to sink into the water and be absorbed. We recommend that you add water, and once liquid has stopped flowing out, add the enzymes. This allows them to sink through the water and begin to work. You can also add water at a different time than the Digester Powder. If the waste has become like a thick paste, stirring in the Digester Powder will help them get started again. Do not add waste for 24 hours.
  • Adding enough Digester Powder: Depending on the number of dogs and their diet needs the usage will vary. Add 1 T of powder per dog, per week. If your dog eats table scraps, or has a premium diet or high-fiber, you will need to increase the amount of your Powder or switch to the Waste Terminator, our more concentrated form (it has twice the amount of Bacteria and Enzymes per tablespoon).
  • The Digester will not work well in temperatures below 40 degrees. The Doggie Dooley will be dormant during the winter months and then can be used once the weather has warmed up again.
  • The soil may have too much clay content that prevents the absorbing of the liquid. If this is the case, the unit must be moved to an area with good soil. Ensure that the hole was deep enough and dug to original directions. If the hole has caved in, you will have to move the Doggie Dooley to another area with a new hole.
  • Add pet waste on a continuous basis. This allows continuous breakdown. Add daily, do not wait until the end of the week and add all at once overloading the unit.

Draining Too Quickly-- " My problem seems to be that my soil "perks" too well, as I put 5 gallons and it drains so quickly that I don't think the Digester Powder is having a chance to decompose the waste. Does the Digester Powder continue to work even though the water has drained completely?"

  • Sandy soil will cause quick drainage. If the level of water will not stay consistent for 24 hours, your water is draining too quickly and is not giving the enzymes a chance to work. You may have to move the septic tank or purchase model #2000 or #3000 to allow the Digester Powder to break down before being disposed of.
  • Residuals-- " If I stop adding waste but continue to add water and Digester Powder will everything completely be absorb eventually and will the hole be clean?"
  • Some residual on the bottom of the tank is normal. This is a septic tank and it will never be clean again. If you stop adding waste but continue to add water and Digester Powder, it will not break everything down.

Lost Directions-- " Help!! I've lost the directions and want to get started as soon as possible."

  • Add 5 - 6 gallons of water to the septic tank. Ensure that the water does not have a high chlorine level. If you smell chlorine when you run the tap water, allow water to stand/sit out overnight. Add 2 T. of the Digester Powder and then add 2-3 days worth of stools. Continue adding stools on a daily basis afterwards.

Lost Directions-- "I've lost the directions to the Digester Powder, how do I maintain the Doggie Dooley?"

  • If you have a model #3500 or #3800, add 5 gallons of water 2-3 times a week. Add one T. of the digester per dog per week and add stools on a daily basis.
  • If you have a model #2000 or #3000, add a quart of water daily and 1 T.of digester per dog per week. Continue to add stools on a daily basis.
  • After adding the Digester Powder, allow 24 hours before adding any more waste.

Vacation-- "What if I go on vacation and do not use the Doggie Dooley for an extended period of time?"

  • It is important to add the stools on a daily basis. If you do not use the unit for a period of two weeks or longer it will be necessary to repeat the start up procedure.

Winter Use-- "Can I use my Doggie Dooley in the winter rime or during cold weather?"

  • Your Doggie Dooley is made from very durable material. It will not break or crack in cold weather or with normal use. However, the digester powder becomes inactive at 40 degrees Fahrenheit and below. When the ground temperature drops below 40 degrees F, do not add waste to the unit. Wait until the temperature rises, and follow the start up instructions again. If you have dug deep enough, depending on weather conditions, you may keep using the unit as long as it is digesting. We recommend you add warm water exclusively in the Winter.
  • Insect Pests-- "Are flies or other pests attracted to the Doggie Dooley?"

  • Insects may lay eggs on dog stools before they are put into the Doggie Dooley. If this happens, the eggs will turn into maggots. Because the Digester will not kill anything alive it will be necessary to spray the contents with a bug bomb. Usually fly eggs will not hatch unless the contents of the unit are too dry.
